How does the SaveCell Vault identify my account?

The SaveCell Vault holds four pieces of information to help it identify and manage your account. They are:-

a) The unique serial number serial number of your telephone handset.
b) Your current phone number.
c) Your username that you set when you registered.
d) A check value for your Scramble Key.

When you change your phone number in some way, either by changing your SIM card, or the phone service provider giving you a new number, only item b) changes, so the SaveCell Vault can still locate your account, and adjust its data about your account accordingly.

If you change your phone for a new one with your old SIM, only item a) changes, and the SaveCell Vault can identify you by items b) and c). It connects you to your account, and offers you the opportunity to download your Contacts to your new handset. Subscription charges will transfer to your new phone.

If you have a new handset and a new SIM, the SaveCell Vault can no longer reliably identify you, as User Names are not unique in the SaveCell Vault. In this case, a new account is set up and subscription charges will apply to this new account. You may use your old User Name and Scramble Key, to avoid having to remember a fresh pair of values. Your old Contacts may be downloaded from your old account, giving its Phone Number, User Name and Scramble Key.  The old account will continue to exist, but if your old phone is no longer used, it will stop incurring subscription charges.

For the technically minded:
What is a check value for a Scramble Key?
This is a 16-digit random number that your phone scrambled using your Scramble Key when it was first registered and it is sent to the SaveCell Vault as part of the registration process. This number is sent to your phone by the SaveCell Vault whenever you try to retrieve some data. Your phone unscrambles the check value using your Scramble Key (which always stays locally in your phone) in order to enable the retrieval of your contacts. If the check value unscrambles to a random number, rather than a gibberish mix of letters and numbers, you have got the correct Scramble Key. This provides a check on typing errors, without compromising your privacy by having to send your Scramble Key to the SaveCell Vault. If you give the wrong Scramble Key on a ‘Get Contacts’ operation, the retrieve will be cancelled.
